The effect is permanent, but does not penetrate very deeply into the wood, so the underside of the whorl has its natural coloring because material was removed after bleaching to achieve the desired thickness. You can also see the natural color of the wood on the top of the whorl where it meets the shaft because material was removed post bleaching to create the smoothly tapered join.
